  • My courses are suitable for everyone.  But why?

Mixed ability classes are dynamic and offer increased learning opportunities.
Beginners are inspired by working alongside more experienced learners.
Experienced learners build self confidence by sharing their knowledge and skills.

Streamed classes can put a ‘glass ceiling’ on your learning and limit your progression.
Adult learners bring a life time of skills and experience to the class.  This can’t be streamed.
I believe in leaving the opportunity open for unexpected leaps of learning and creativity that can propel students beyond the narrow definitions of ‘beginner, intermediate or advanced’.

This is why – We draw. We learn.  Have fun – together.

Course structure

You will be encouraged to explore and develop an extended vocabulary of mark making.  Combined with a series of processes, materials and techniques you will have the opportunity to make drawings that revel in their sheer joy of being expressive and evocative abstract marks – a coming together of mood, emotion, technique and skill.  Drawings equivalent to music!  My other courses touch on this aspect of drawing but this is your chance to take it to the next level. By the end of the 2 – days you will leave inspired and excited about the possibilities of drawing.

Day 1
The course starts with mark-making exercises to help you discover the connection between the marks you make and self expression.  This exploration of material-led processes underpins both days of the course.  We make drawings using a variety of materials giving students the chance to explore and experiment with familiar and some unusual materials and techniques.

Making experimental abstract drawings relies on having a wealth of experience to inspire us, but all too often we find it dries up and we simply repeat what we already know.  I take students through processes that will teach you how to continually find new ideas that will feed your imagination and give birth to continually evolving drawings.

Day 2
We start by experimenting with more mark making techniques to help you create surprisingly original and expressive drawings.  Students will gain a deeper understanding of the experimental processes used by artists that enables them to reach new and unexpected results to drive their practice forward.  Through a variety of other processes students will learn to develop the freedom and spontaneity to enable you to make dynamic drawings that express creativity and a richness of surface and technique.

Everything you learn on this course is supported by demonstrations and learning from other artists images. Your increased confidence, technical mark making skills and deeper understanding of the creative process can be used to further develop your artwork whether you are an abstract artists or prefer realistic observational drawing and painting.
