Materials-led workshops: These  materials-led workshops give beginners, improvers and intermediate students the opportunity to focus on and explore the versatility of a range of different art materials; from soluble drawing materials, pastel painting, and a range of monochrome drawing materials.

Each course will give you the opportunity to learn how each drawing material works, their strengths, tips and tricks to get the most from them, and how to adopt a materials-led approach to developing your artistic potential and find your own unique drawing style.

Introduction to Soluble drawing materials

Soluble drawing materials offer artists the excitement of working at the cross roads of drawing and painting.  Discovery and unpredictability are often part and parcel of these soluble art materials, although learning and practicing technique will give you greater control and precision. 

This course includes working with soluble graphite, soluble colour pencils, pen and water colour wash, and enjoying the playfulness of drawing inks.

What will we be drawing?
Still life objects, and creative interpretations of landscape, interior or figurative photographs

  • Essential items to bring

    1. Pencil: 4B, 6B
    2. Plastic erasor
    3. Painting paper
      choose either;
    • Daler Rowney: A2 size
      System 3 acrylic pad
      230gsm – 20 sheets
    • Winsor + Newton: 500 x 400 size
      Galleria acrylic pad
      300gsm – 15 sheets

    Optional items to bring
    Baby wipes (hand cleansing tissues)
    Rag (old cloth) for smudging charcoal or paint when drawing
    Wear old clothes or bring an apron
    Pen and notebook for taking notes during the course

Introduction to charcoal and graphite materials

Discover the freedom of drawing with willow charcoal, the emotive power of compressed charcoal, the joy of gestural mark making with graphite, and the closely observed details you can achieve when drawing in pencil.

Improve your use of tone, shading and blending techniques.  The creative use of putty and plastic erasers will also be explored which will give you a greater sense of creative freedom and self expression when drawing.

Still life objects, and creative interpretations of landscape, interior or figurative photographs

Introduction to Pastel painting materials

We will be learning the art of using pastel painting materials which include soft pastels and oil pastels. Discover the variety of creative ways you can use pastels in both dry and soluble form which gives you a broad range of styles to work in. 

Pastel painting allows you to achieve stunning results almost immediately – so join us and dive into a world of colour and texture that allows you tremendous creative freedom.
