Art + Creativity: Material Techniques – Summer 2022
“Learnt how to use the different materials and how to approach a new material to help understand its characteristics.”

I loved teaching this hands-on course getting deeply involved with different materials – from dry drawing materials to wet painterly materials like acrylics and inks. I was able to enthuse students in the love of embracing the different material qualities and understanding more deeply how each material plays a central role in giving character to their artworks. Our use of materials either supports or detracts from your ability to draw, render and what we wish to express in your art. A fabulous group of 6 students all willing to give everything a go and discover those materials they enjoy and those they don’t.

Student comments
“Stimulating and thought provoking. Much more wide-ranging than expected. I learnt many new things and gained further insight to existing knowledge. [I gained] more confidence in the use of different media, learnt the characteristics of the materials available. I have loved the process of learning. Excellent teaching.”

“I’ve really enjoyed learning about the different materials and techniques in how to apply them. Some I’ve loved using while others I found quite difficult to master. The best thing I’ve learnt is how to use pen and wash to great effect as well as oil pastels. I feel these have greatly enhanced my approach to my work – I also want to explore collage and mixed-media more. Has definitely met my expectations and with homework has had me researching and drawing far more at home. I found certain materials difficult but will continue traying to master.”

“very enjoyable. Challenges your way of thinking about art. I’ve learnt lots. Great to use different techniques and think I’ll be more confident exploring more abstract art. Especially enjoyed pencil, acrylic classes. More than met my expectations – I’ve already recommended it to my friends.”

“It takes you on a journey through the different materials from light and shade, through colour with many detours along the way. Learnt how to use the different materials and how to approach a new material to help understand its characteristics. [My course highlights were] having opportunities to play and receiving feedback. As a beginner it was hard receiving feedback. Thanks for persevering [and being supportive] as it was in the end really helpful. Exceeded my expectations as I wasn’t sure what to expect.”
