Expressive Drawing – Oct 2022

It was fab! Really enjoyed all of it and it did what I hoped, feeing me up from trying unsuccessfully to draw what I see. Really encouraging and a safe atmosphere to take artistic risks.”

A fabulous course to teach with a fantastic group of students this weekend. Everyone seemed so willing to give it a go and challenge themselves to do things differently – I think the results of the images that the students created this weekend speak volumes about the effort they put in.

“Really loved being encouraged to explore ways of using even familiar materials an dusing art and art history to see how and why. [I’ve learnt] loads of new routes to freedom via cerative techniques and encouragement to experiment and practice and play. [My course highlights were] separating looking at reality and playing with textures in new shapes. It was fab! Really enjoyed all of it and it did what I hoped, feeing me up from trying unsuccessfully to draw what I see. Really encouraging and a safe atmosphere to take artistic risks.”

“A fantastic journey of discovery. The course frees you from realism and opens you up to creativity, albeit, still with solid foundations of process and approach. I have learnt how to start with a subject and to trust the process of moving away from realism, breaking down into the art elements and then making choices about my composition. [My course highlights were] blind drawings are amazing! Colour field drawing was great. The course has been amazing. The mix of process to creativity will allow us to practice and grow after the course.”

“I learned about different principles for making art and how to trust the process and push through when feeling doubtful. I definitely love expressionist/semi-abstract art. I thought I did before but now I do know and I know a bit about why. I had an open mind – I’ve learned to trust your teaching methods and go on your journey. The destination always makes sense eventually.”

“Interesting, informative. [My course highlights were] the slides and talks and having a go and producing something. I learned a lot and it met my needs for explanation, demonstrations and examples via slides. I like handouts and would have valued some on each principle with an example. Nice relaxed atmosphere and friendly group. Thank you for not being scary!”

“Lovely relaxed weekend with friendly and effective tuition. Lots of supportive and encouraging feedback from the tutor and other group members. Expressive art is about the process rather than the outcome. I learned about how the tools and materials used determine what you can do. Breaking rules and playing about with them has been the theme for me. I wanted to learn more about myself as an artist and make more interesting use of materials and tools. Great stuff!”

“A really fun but intense 2 days in which I learnt lots and had the space to push my boundaries in a supportive environment. [I have learnt to] trust the process, follow through with the plan. Look at the art elements – edges, colour, tone, etc. [My course highlights were that I] could not pick one bit – but really liked how it was grounded in examples and freedom to create, Has freed me from wanting everything I do to look like a realistic copy of the think – relax into the business of seeing and creating.”
