Matisse July 2020

My 2nd post lockdown workshop took place on Tuesday evening.  Again, it has to be said just how enjoyable it is being back in the studio talking about the subject I love the most – art!  The Matisse workshop is part of a series of 3 short evening workshops that balances a bit of art history, art theory and practical tasks to help students learn from some of the great 20th century masters and apply their learning to their own art.  Read further to find out what the students thought of their experience.

Student Comments

“Definitely opened my mind a lot about how to put things [elements within the painting] in to a plan.”  My course highlight was “the help I had with deciding with the idea of the painting I was doing and to colour the right way [to achieve the affect I wanted].”
Roxanna B

“Learning about Matisse’s use of colour, shape and gesture was fascinating.  With clear instructions from brian the attempt to use the Art Elements like the Fauves was challenging, but enervating, pointing the way for further exploration and practice.”
Sue M

“Fantastic and interesting workshop.  I learned about a range of techniques used by Matisse and others.”  My course highlight was “channelling emotion into gesture and colour.”
Stephen R

“The course was very enjoyable.  Brian was an excellent, knowledgeable teacher.  The atmosphere was very relaxed.”  I have learnt “an understanding of shape, gesture and colour and how this has influenced abstract art.”  My course highlight was that “I enjoyed every aspect of the course.  The theoretical and practical were well balanced.”
