Art-school Mentoring Session Structure
Art-school Mentoring sessions are an essential tool for teaching and learning in every art school. Creative Art Courses therefore also offers our students the opportunity to benefit from this powerful learning tool to super-charge their creative development.
Art-school mentoring or ‘crits’ can be pivotal in an artist’s development and be the catalyst for taking the ‘next step’ forward. I encourage artists at all levels of experience who take their development seriously, and have the time, to attend an art-school mentoring session with a regularity that fits with their lives.
Small groups (max 4) ensures everyone gets the most benefit from my art-school Mentoring experience.
You may be asking yourself What is a Mentoring or Crit? How do they work? Find out more below.
Each of my Art-school Mentoring session will comprise of;
Fresh thinking Task
Each session starts with a short creative task aimed at freshening up your thinking helping you step out of your usual routines. These may be individual or group tasks, some will feel familiar while others may offer a creative challenge – all will have potential to be creatively rewarding. This will conclude with one of our supportive and empowering Show + Share sessions.
A Personal Focus
This forms the bulk of each session giving each artist time to focus on their personal projects as well as take part in a focused and structured 1:1 crit.
- Personal project
Time for everyone to immerse themselves in their own creative worlds – either by continuing to work on their own personal project they have brought with them to the studio, or by working on the studio project I have set up for the session.
- 1:1 Mentoring
Each artist will have a 30-40 minute 1:1 ‘Crit’ with the tutor to discuss the artworks (up to 5) they have brought with them to share. This is time for artists to have their questions answered, for tutor feedback, and receive individual advice and guidance about their next steps.
Feedback is always positive, supportive, and kind. Artists will be listened to, areas of success will be celebrated, and those areas that need improvement will be explained. This is time to confidentially share frustrations and celebrate successes and together plan the ‘next steps’ required to move forward towards success.
Group Show + Share
The final part of every session is an opportunity for sharing personal work with the group and receive feedback from the other members in a structured format led by the tutor.
Group sharing is a profound way to learn even more about your own strengths and areas in need of improvement. Talking about your work and responding to others work is empowering. No-one is compelled to share comments – listening to others is equally good.
Topics covered
Mentoring or Crit sessions offer feedback, support and guidance in 2D Fine Art skills and creativity with a focus on drawing, painting and mixed media.
The sessions would not be suitable for artists with an interest in 3D sculpture, craft work, illustration, animation, design or graphic art.
