Learn essential knowledge about colour with a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical creative mini-projects. What students learn over the weekend will greatly help make colour mixing a pleasure and enable students to thoughtfully compose the colour elements in their drawings and paintings. Using watercolour paints all weekend will enable students to gain a valuable introduction to painting in watercolours.
The Colour wheel
With the help of the twin-primary colour wheel system students will gain a deeper understanding of colour bias and colour relationships giving them an immediate boost to confidently understanding how to mix the colours they want with the minimum of fuss.
Using watercolour paints students will paint their own colour wheel to keep for future reference.
Tonal value of colour
Tonal value (light or dark) is one of the most misunderstood characteristics of colour. A short landscape or still life project will help students learn about monochrome painting, improve their colour mixing skills, and learn a watercolour glazing technique.
Painters utilise many different colour relationships to bring unity to their paintings. This session will introduce students to two main colour relationships – Analogous and Complimentary. Two short landscape projects will enable students to fully understand how to utilise these relationships in their paintings. Students will learn more colour mixing skills, and watercolour painting techniques such as dry-brush, wet-in wet, and wet on dry.
Watercolour painting techniques
Students will put their new colour knowledge and colour mixing skills to good use and learn watercolour painting techniques to help render convincing-looking painted textures such as tree bark, wood flooring, grass, sky or water. This session completes teaching students the skills required for the Watercolour level 1 course and gives them the foundation skills to embark on their own watercolour landscape or interior painting projects at home.
By the end of the course…
Students will go home feeling confident in their colour mixing skills knowing colour mixing is no longer a matter of chance. Their greater understand of the main colour relationships used in paintings and a growing set of skills in the use of watercolour brush techniques will give them the confidence to greatly improve their paintings and drawings.
