Students will always benefit from clear instructions and lots of one-to-one tuition on all of my courses.
Level 1: Absolute-beginner
For those students who have never done any art or are returning to art after a very long break.
Teaching focuses on core skills with tutor-led exercises on use of materials and techniques
Level 2: Beginner + Improver
For those students who have done some art learning, draw or paint occasionally at home or attend an art group, and feel they need to gain a foundation in the basic techniques.
Teaching focuses on core skills, understanding and use of the Art Elements + Principles, materials + techniques, with tutor-led exercises and mini projects.
Level 3: Intermediate
For those students who have learnt the basic techniques, have gained some artistic confidence and are seeking to develop their skills further to create more complex work.
Teaching focuses on developing art skills, creative techniques and individual styles, students’ ability to self-assess their work, encouraging experimentation, with tutor-led exercises and time for extended projects with the benefit of group critiques.
Level 4: Experienced
For those students confident in their abilities and techniques, who are looking to challenge themselves further, to create a coherent body of work, possibly to exhibit and sell.
Teaching focuses on guiding students in developing their own ideas and self-directed practice, through enhancing personal skills and techniques and encouraging a deeper contextual awareness with the benefit of one-to-one tutorials.

Discover the freedom and physicality of drawing with willow charcoal.
Embrace the emotive power of compressed charcoal. Uncover the joy of gestural mark making with graphite.
Develop the skills for detailed tonal blending when drawing in pencil.

Teaching Level: Beginners, Improvers, Intermediate
Course Structure
Improve the use of tone, shading and blending with putty and plastic erasers, and develop the use of creative line and mark-making to add depth and self-expression. Perfect for all students who wish to learn the expressive qualities of working with monochrome tones.
Detailed pencil
Session 1
Beginning with an overview of all the materials used on the course and a demonstration of how to draw with pencils and master detailed toning, blending, shading, and quality of line and mark-making, students will work on 2 of their own creative drawings.
Expressive graphite
Session 2
Larger scale drawings require a bolder approach and students will learn about the characteristics of graphite sticks. A second creative project will allow students time to experiment and explore the qualities and expressive range of graphite.
Freedom of Willow charcoal
Session 3
After a demonstration in using willow charcoal students will work on a project that allows them to explore the freedom and flexibility of willow charcoal. Students will discover how willow charcoal allows fabulous control over developing tone, whilst continuing to explore creative line.
Power of compressed charcoal
Session 4
Unleashing the expressive power of drawing with compressed charcoal demands working at a large scale. Students will be asked to fully explore quality of line and mark-making, with a focus on composition and use of tone to add drama and expression to their drawings.
By the end of the course…
Students will go home feeling empowered by the creative opportunities of working in monochrome tones with new skills and techniques to make the most of pencil, graphite and charcoal.
