Learn how to change your approach to drawing and learn to create powerfully engaging and personally expressive contemporary drawings.
Discover ways to edit, re-imagine, and creatively re-interpret your subject matter.
Gain control of the creative process and create drawings that express a unique artistic vision.
Working from still life arrangements, students will put objective reality to one side and work within a contemporary approach that puts the student’s personal creativity centre stage. Everything students learn on this course can equally be used to creatively re-imagine and interpret landscapes or figurative subjects.
Creative visual thinking
Session 1 Starting with some drawing games to help release students from the confines of realistic looking drawings, students will work with soft chalk and oil pastels to develop fast-paced approach to visual thinking that will help free up their creativity.
Extracting the Art Elements
Session 2 Separating out the Art Elements from within the still life objects helps students discover unique mark-making that creates drawings with a rich interesting surface texture. Students also learn how to pull the Art Elements together to create compositions full of a unique personal vision.
Embracing flow + change
Session 3 Students will learn a technique using oil pastels that enables them to draw with flexibility and intuition while adding layers of interest and depth to their drawings. Students will learn a second soft pastel and collage technique that will give them ultimate flexibility and control of their drawing.
Uncovering an artistic voice
Session 4 Students will learn more about composition to create dynamic drawings that more closely express their own style and artistic voice. The drawings completed this session represent the beginnings of a personal creative journey to express their own true vision.
By the end of the course…
Students will have developed the skills and creative confidence to create drawings in a style that is true to their own inner artist’s voice – no longer a slave to realism and naturalism.

Students will always benefit from clear instructions and lots of one-to-one tuition on all of my courses.
Level 1: Absolute-beginner For those students who have never done any art or are returning to art after a very long break. Teaching focuses on core skills with tutor-led exercises on use of materials and techniques
Level 2: Beginner + Improver For those students who have done some art learning, draw or paint occasionally at home or attend an art group, and feel they need to gain a foundation in the basic techniques. Teaching focuses on core skills, understanding and use of the Art Elements + Principles, materials + techniques, with tutor-led exercises and mini projects.
Level 3: Intermediate For those students who have learnt the basic techniques, have gained some artistic confidence and are seeking to develop their skills further to create more complex work. Teaching focuses on developing art skills, creative techniques and individual styles, students’ ability to self-assess their work, encouraging experimentation, with tutor-led exercises and time for extended projects with the benefit of group critiques.
Level 4: Experienced For those students confident in their abilities and techniques, who are looking to challenge themselves further, to create a coherent body of work, possibly to exhibit and sell. Teaching focuses on guiding students in developing their own ideas and self-directed practice, through enhancing personal skills and techniques and encouraging a deeper contextual awareness with the benefit of one-to-one tutorials.
