Creative Life Drawing Foundations
A structured course teaching a holistic self-expressive approach to life drawing rooted in empirical observation. The Creative Life Drawing Foundations course offers beginners and more experienced drawers a deeply transformative life drawing experience teaching foundational skills to drawing, perception and creativity.

Creative Life Drawing Foundations is a fully taught tutor-led course that teaches the fundamentals of figure drawing via a variety of experiential exercises. Techniques, ideas, and approaches learnt on this course will form the foundations upon which to build all future drawing skills.

While being guided step-by-step, students will improve their observation skills, drawing accuracy, and attention to detail while developing a deeper clarity of vision of the model in 3-dimensional space.

Embrace the humanity of drawing the human figure from life.

Includes all materials + model fees

Course Outline

Students just beginning life drawing will benefit from learning a host of techniques to help them draw more accurately and avoid many common drawing errors.

For more experienced drawers, the course will offer an opportunity to reconnect with new ways of thinking about creativity, perception, and what it means to create life drawings that capture the essential life-force and movement of the human form.

This is an expressive and creative life drawing course – not a traditional ‘academic-realist’ course.

Course structure

The Creative Life Drawing Foundations course teaches essential foundational life drawing and perception skills inspired by the approach written about by Heather Spears in her book The Creative Eye (published 2011). The fully guided course covers topics such as;

  • Exploring the visual field
  • Engaging with 3-dimensional space
  • Exploring the relationship between the figure and space
  • Using tone to sculpt depth

  • Drawing mass, volume, and weight
  • Appreciating the power of line and contour
  • Sensitivity and creativity of line

Movement, flow and connection

  • Drawing movement and poetic flow
  • Extended line
  • Seeing the roots of gesture and movement
  • Reframing our approach to anatomy

Avoiding common perceptive errors

  • Seeing more detail – avoiding commonalities
  • Seeking a personal truth through drawing
  • Approaches to sidestep drawing pitfalls

3-day Weekend Intensive

The 3-day version of this course selects the essential core information from the full 10-session course. It is taught over a 3-day weekend to enable as many people as possible to experience the insights and approaches that have the power to transform drawing and perception.

Ideal for those with limited time, work commitments, and drawers travelling to Manchester.

Is this course for me?

This course is suitable for students of all abilities, from beginners to more experienced drawers. Everyone will be encouraged to stretch themselves and develop their artistic abilities and attitudes towards drawing and creativity, while being offered lots of creative support, 1:1 guidance and group critiques within a friendly, supportive and welcoming studio environment.
