Expressive drawing L1
£145.00
Weekend course 2-days
Learn creative techniques and approaches in how to edit, re-imagine, and creatively re-interpret your subject. Explore ways of embracing an expressive semi-abstract style and create highly personal expressions of the still life arrangements. Move away from realism, take control of the creative process, and create drawings that freely express a unique artistic vision.
Projects use a variety of different drawing materials and techniques to enable students to radically transform the still life arrangements into contemporary-styled self-expressive drawings.
Suitable for: Adults, beginners, improvers, returners, intermediate
Course Structure
Working from still life arrangements, students will put objective reality to one side and work within a contemporary approach that puts the student’s personal creativity centre stage. Everything students learn on this course can equally be used to creatively re-imagine and interpret landscapes or figurative subjects.
Visualising Creative ideas
Session 1
Starting with some drawing games to help release students from the confines of realistic looking drawings, students will work with soft chalk and oil pastels to develop fast-paced approach to visualising ideas that will help free up their creativity and self-expressive vision.
Extracting the Art Elements
Session 2
Separating out the Art Elements (line, tone, colour, shape, texture, pattern) from within the still life objects helps students discover unique mark-making that creates drawings with a rich interesting surface texture. Students also learn how to pull the Art Elements together to create compositions full of a unique personal vision.
Embracing flow + change
Session 3
Students will learn a technique using oil pastels that enables them to draw with flexibility and intuition while adding layers of interest and depth to their drawings. Students will learn a second soft pastel and collage technique that will give them ultimate creative flexibility and control of their drawing.
Uncovering self-expression
Session 4
Students will learn more about composition to create dynamic drawings that more closely express their own style and artistic voice. The drawings completed this session represent the beginnings of a personal creative journey to express their own true vision.
By the end of the course…
Students will have developed the skills and creative confidence to create drawings in a style that is true to their own inner artist’s voice – no longer a slave to realism and naturalism.
