Matisse inspired the world with bold shapes and ground-breaking use of outrageous colour.
For the first time in art, paintings were able to express the artists feelings, rather than simply describe objects.
Learn to use personal and emotive colour.
This practical tutor-led workshop will enliven student’s own creativity and offer them new ideas to improve their own drawing and painting. There is added inspiration from contemporary living artists that will give a modern twist to Matisse’s influence. Students will create their own expressive contemporary still life drawings that embrace the bold use of personally expressive colour.
Learn the essence behind Matisse’s ideas and the reason for his fame
Be inspired and apply the new ideas to help transform their own personal style
Students will be creating new art and will not be copying or making Matisse look-alike images

THE MAIN FOCUS
Students will learn that even now in the 21 century artists are still reflecting on the issues Matisse tried to resolve. The focus of the workshop is to guide students to explore and develop their own personal skills and techniques. Students will be supported and guided to create inspired, personal, creative artwork that help them develop their own drawing or painting style.
What will students be drawing or painting?
Contemporary still life drawings that play with colour relationships to enhance personal self-expression – transforming everyday objects into emotionally charged subject matter.
Students will be using acrylic paints and pencils during the workshop.
By the end of the workshop…
Students will leave the workshop understanding Matisse’s ideas more fully. Having travelled a creative journey to discover their own creative solutions, students will be better able to transform their own drawing and painting.

Level 1: Absolute-beginner For those students who have never done any art or are returning to art after a very long break. Teaching focuses on core skills with tutor-led exercises on use of materials and techniques
Level 2: Beginner + Improver For those students who have done some art learning, draw or paint occasionally at home or attend an art group, and feel they need to gain a foundation in the basic techniques. Level 3: Intermediate For those students who have learnt the basic techniques, have gained some artistic confidence and are seeking to develop their skills further to create more complex work. Teaching focuses on developing art skills, creative techniques and individual styles, students’ ability to self-assess their work, encouraging experimentation, with tutor-led exercises and time for extended projects with the benefit of group critiques.
Level 4: Experienced For those students confident in their abilities and techniques, who are looking to challenge themselves further, to create a coherent body of work, possibly to exhibit and sell.
