Course Structure

This practical tutor-led workshop will enliven student’s own creativity and offer them new ideas to improve their own drawing and painting. There is added inspiration from contemporary living artists that will give a modern twist to Matisse’s influence.  Students will create their own expressive contemporary still life drawings that embrace the bold use of personally expressive colour.

  • Learn the essence behind Matisse’s ideas and the reason for his fame
  • Be inspired and apply the new ideas to help transform their own personal style
  • Students will be creating new art and will not be copying or making Matisse look-alike images

Inspiration

  • Matisse (1869- 1954)
  • Variety of contemporary living artists

THE MAIN FOCUS

Students will learn that even now in the 21 century artists are still reflecting on the issues Matisse tried to resolve.  The focus of the workshop is to guide students to explore and develop their own personal skills and techniques.  Students will be supported and guided to create inspired, personal, creative artwork that help them develop their own drawing or painting style.

What will students be drawing or painting?

Contemporary still life drawings that play with colour relationships to enhance personal self-expression – transforming everyday objects into emotionally charged subject matter.

Students will be using acrylic paints and pencils during the workshop.

By the end of the workshop…

Students will leave the workshop understanding Matisse’s ideas more fully.  Having travelled a creative journey to discover their own creative solutions, students will be better able to transform their own drawing and painting.

For beginners looking to establish, refresh and gain confidence in fundamental core techniques.

    Level 2: Improver
For improvers who already have the basics and wish to develop and enhance their skills and techniques further.

    Level 3: Intermediate
For those students with a growing, but limited, amount of art experience who feel confident in their art knowledge and skills yet recognise the need for further creative learning to take their art to the next level.

    Level 4: Experienced
For those students with creative experience who feel confident in their abilities and techniques, who are looking to challenge themselves further, to create a coherent body of work, possibly to exhibit and sell.

  • What course should I do next?

To help you answer the question,

“What course should I do next?”

There are 2 approaches to deciding what to do next.

    1. Treat my courses as a Mix + Match Patchwork
All my courses can be booked as single stand-alone courses on whichever topic takes your interest.
Just book whichever course you want when it suits you.
    2. Choose one of the linked courses at the bottom of this page
These courses are suggestions that will help you develop and progress your art in a more focused direction.

Whichever approach you choose, remember to check the Teaching Levels to decide if the course is appropriate for you. Contact me if you’re not sure and I’ll be happy to help.

Student Quotes

“Extremely well structured session to allow personal creativity to come through.  Starting from emotions – using colour, shape and gesture to express this.”  Helped me to “look at things differently, learning a new way to do a painting.  My course highlight was” being inspired again.”
Barbara B
“Fun, intense, creative, a really good learning hand-on experience.  Using emotion and being really in touch with it”.  I enjoyed being able to “learn with a friendly group of people and an inspiring tutor.” My course highlight was working with “colour!”
Catherine M
“Relaxed environment, time passed so quickly, wonderful environment for painting.  I have learnt to focus my painting on my own emotion, rather than the object.  Fantastic as a refresher course.  My course highlight was the “excellent 10-minute PowerPoint discussing shape, colour and paint.” Ashton W
