Mentoring group

Many artists, at all levels of experience, rely on critique + mentoring groups like this to help them with ongoing long-term creative development.

Joining a group

If you do not currently have a group of friends or colleagues with a shared creative interest but you would like to join a Mentoring group, add your name to the waiting list and I will contact you when I am able to form a new group of 4 or 5 artists.

If you already have a group of artist friends or colleagues, then you can form your own private Mentoring group.

Beginner artists

Beginners can benefit from receiving creative mentoring and objective critique or feedback on a selection of work they have completed to help them identify their creative strengths and those areas in need of improvement.

Improver, and intermediate level artists

Those with more art experience can benefit from receiving objective critiques or feedback on work they have completed around particular themes or projects. This helps artists gain a clear idea as to what is working and what needs to be revised, both in their work and the project as a whole.

The critique I offer is in 2D Fine Art skills and creativity with a focus on drawing, painting and mixed media – I do not offer critique for 3D sculpture, craft work, illustration, animation, design or graphic art.

  • What happens during Mentoring sessions?

    Studio mentoring sessions include the following;

    • friendly and encouraging responses to drawings and paintings
    • affirmation on creative successes and guidance on areas that need improving
    • encouragement and suggestions on maintaining a positive creative attitude
    • practical advice on how the Art Elements (line, tone, colour, form, shape, pattern, texture) are working within the artworks and how they can be improved
    • considering how the Art Principles (composition balance, proportion, focal point, movement, rhythm, and harmony) impact on their work and how these aspects can be enhanced where required
    • advice and guidance on materials and techniques
    • help with understanding confusing ‘artspeak’ and highlighting links between the group members’ artwork within a contemporary or historical context
    • a positive dialogue allowing group members to share their ideas and creative concerns allowing them the best chance to grow and develop
    • suggestions on how group members can set up their own home-based projects to keep motivation high
    • actively listen to group members explain what they are trying to achieve in their drawing or painting projects and suggest ways forward to develop their work both technically and/or creatively
    • plan a series of ongoing critique sessions at regular intervals to support continued improvement
  • Are Mentoring sessions for me?

    Mentoring sessions usually suit artists who;

    • have only recently found the time to take their art more seriously and need much needed objective feedback on how to progress and improve
    • have been making art for a while but have lost direction and need to gain some objectivity about their strengths and areas for improvement to gain a deeper appreciation of how to improve as an artist
    • have developed quite well on their own or with support other teachers and are now working on a longer project and require feedback at various stages to stay focused and ensure the project continues to progress positively
    • are working towards an exhibition and need support and guidance as their deadline approaches
    • are feeling a little stuck and would benefit from an objective overview of their work
    • need support to find a new way forward

Students will always benefit from clear instructions, lots of one-to-one tuition, guidance and supportive encouragement on all of my courses.

    Level 0: Absolute-beginner
For absolute-beginners to start learning art for the first time. Teaching focuses on core skills with step-by-step instructions.

    Level 1: Beginner
For beginners looking to establish, refresh and gain confidence in fundamental core techniques.

    Level 2: Improver
For improvers who already have the basics and wish to develop and enhance their skills and techniques further.

    Level 3: Intermediate
For those students with a growing, but limited, amount of art experience who feel confident in their art knowledge and skills yet recognise the need for further creative learning to take their art to the next level.

    Level 4: Experienced
For those students with creative experience who feel confident in their abilities and techniques, who are looking to challenge themselves further, to create a coherent body of work, possibly to exhibit and sell.

  • What course should I do next?

To help you answer the question,

“What course should I do next?”

There are 2 approaches to deciding what to do next.

    1. Treat my courses as a Mix + Match Patchwork
All my courses can be booked as single stand-alone courses on whichever topic takes your interest.
Just book whichever course you want when it suits you.
    2. Choose one of the linked courses at the bottom of this page
These courses are suggestions that will help you develop and progress your art in a more focused direction.

Whichever approach you choose, remember to check the Teaching Levels to decide if the course is appropriate for you. Contact me if you’re not sure and I’ll be happy to help.
