Still life interiors and the modern colourists
Colour profoundly influences our perceptions, feelings, and interactions with the world and used correctly has the power to transform your paintings beyond the ordinary. This inspiring course creatively explores how colour transforms a still life composition into a highly engaging and emotive visual experience to enable you to express vibrancy and joy in your art.

You will learn;

  • acrylic painting and mixed media techniques
  • about colour stories and colour mixing skills
  • to explore your creative ideas and express yourself through still life composition
  • about Modern and contemporary artists and deepen your appreciation of the visual arts

You will be using acrylic paint and an exciting mixed media technique, along with a variety of drawing materials. You will work on a series of mini projects and complete a large-scale still life painting enabling you to uncover new avenues for self-expression and exciting techniques to improve your art.

Inspiration comes from a delightful mix of contemporary artists like Peter Graham and Glen Scouler, Scottish Modern colourists; and Impressionists such as Matisse and Emile Bernard.

Course in more detail

Session 1
You will be introduced to your subject matter by making a mixed-media drawing using charcoal and gesso to better understand shape, form, tone and texture. All vital ingredients to develop over the coming sessions.
Session 2
Delving deeper into the still life you will use thumbnail sketches to examine different composition structures as a powerful tool to help you improve the story telling within your art. These will be interpreted into broadly painted expressive colour stories that explore the range of emotion we can bring to the still life objects.
Session 3 + 4
Over these 2 sessions you will create a large-scale painting on paper in a contemporary naturalistic style exploring how you can use composition, colour, and brushwork to tell your personal story through still life.

Note: session plans may change to respond to the needs of the group

By the end of the course…

Your creative confidence will have grown as you will have learnt new skills and techniques to render naturalistic looking still life objects. You will have gained greater confidence in mixing colour, applying paint, and developing colour stories to tell your personal story. You will leave inspired to continue still life painting at home, more aware of the wide possibilities this subject matter has to offer you as a creative artist.
